Materials Engineer


The Materials Engineer will provide technical support of materials for the company's plant while researching and developing current and next generation products, with a focus on materials and composite technology. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting production with materials and color issues, evaluating new materials and colors, improving current products through process/formulation/materials changes, evaluating competitive products to establish a benchmark, and to track incoming raw materials.
Essential Duties and
Responsibilities:
Plans trials and produces experimental extrusion samples of prototype material formulations and products.
Carries out extensive testing procedures on experimental samples and record data.
Analyzes test data and communicates results through technical reporting; makes recommendations based on data
Communicates with current suppliers or potential vendors to acquire revised or next generation materials
Researches new materials or new technology relevant to Wood Plastic Composite
Determines specifications and communicates incoming raw material requirements to suppliers
Identifies root cause of production issues related to raw materials and identifies countermeasures
Performs laboratory equipment maintenance and service
Selects, supervises, develops, evaluates and motivates personnel in the Research and Development area
Performs additional duties as needed and/or assigned by supervision/management
Supervisory
Responsibilities:
This position will directly supervise personnel in the Research and Development area as appropriate. In addition, this position will directly/indirectly lead additional personnel and multi-functional teams, on a project by project basis.
Qualifications, Education and
Experience:
Bachelor's in Materials Science Engineering or Chemical Engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Three to five years experience in a similar position
Experience in a research and development environment, polymer science training, hands on laboratory experimentation and data collection
Success in planning, executing and managing projects.
Thorough knowledge of general lab testing and measuring equipment (scales, density, beakers, etc.)
Ability to run an extruder (lab or production), preferably both twin screw and single screw
Excellent problem solving abilities and mathematical aptitudeEstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
